Company principal, James Stewart has many years of experience in working in the field of laser and optical radiation evaluation and safety management, with a diverse range of clients and industry sectors including aerospace, manufacturing, defence, entertainment, legal, transportation and power production.

Equipped with state-of-the-art precision optical radiation measurement instrumentation LVR Optical can undertake safety assessments of products establishing compliance with international product safety standards. LVR Optical also support occupational laser and optical radiation safety management, carrying out onsite evaluations of exposure levels, audits, and reviews, as well as training, to help organisations develop practical safe systems of workplace safety. Building on James’ scientific and technical background, working with the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) ahead of the Artificial Optical Radiation Directive being implemented in the United Kingdom, he developed an in-depth understanding and experience in assessing complex lighting emissions, and techniques to obtain precise repeatable assessments. James continues keep abreast of the most current approaches to safety assessment and implementation which is essential with evolving lighting technologies and emerging product types.

Working in wider spanning fields, including industrial, research and product development; James regularly assists users and organisations in laser and optical radiation safety awareness, staff training, product compliance, and exposure assessment. James has also worked with the National Physical Laboratory in London ahead of the Artificial Optical Radiation Directive being implemented in the UK, where James developed an in-depth knowledge and experience in assessing product emissions and occupational exposure to broadband light sources. LVR utilises its well-placed combination of technical knowledge and professional occupational safety expertise and experience to deliver effective practical solutions for ensuring workplace and product safety that enhance business performance and wellbeing, rather than act as an inhibitor.

In the entertainment sector LVR Optical are known for being leaders in safely managing high power lasers and light sources, having regularly worked with many of the UK’s largest venues, and broadcast institutions acting as consulting Laser Protection Advisers. Using the wealth of experience and expertise gained in this sector, James was the Project Lead for the development of the IEC international standards document relating specifically to the safe use of lasers for display applications, which has now been adopted by many countries throughout the world. James continues to share his knowledge through regular training sessions for stakeholders in the sector.

LVR Optical undertakes work throughout the whole of the United Kingdom and overseas as required.

Facilitating LVR's objectives James Stewart holds several scientific, computing, and health & safety related qualifications including a BSc (Hons) and an MSc Degree from the University of Strathclyde.

James is a Chartered Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (CMIOSH). He is also a committee member of the British Standards Institution (BSI) group for Optical Radiation Safety and Laser Equipment, and a UK Expert involved in international safety standards development through the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

Both James and Julie hold BLS certification as a Certified Laser Safety Officer, and NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety.
